Sport Talk Club: Education continues sports professional life
The Parimatch Education platform once again raises important and topical issues related to sports. Thus, the seventh meeting of Sport Talk Club was dedicated to the issue of education for athletes and how to continue their professional life in sports. Thousands of athletes are lost and go bankrupt at the end of their careers, unable to find work and easily saying goodbye to their ambitions. How to prevent and prepare for this?
You need to learn during your career, use every opportunity
Former Shakhtar Donetsk captain and now football director Darijo Srna used his own chance to stay in the sport and spoke about it during the discussion. You need to be able to face problems and admit your mistakes in order to progress. Darijo sincerely said that he regretted paying not enough attention to self-education: “When I was a footballer, it was difficult to focus on something else. You are always in the process, daily training and games. I didn’t even have the opportunity to read many books – a game on Sunday, the next match on Wednesday, and then on the football field again on Saturday. You don’t have time to relax emotionally and adjust to the next game, it’s hard to immerse yourself in learning something new. ”
Today’s generation of players is more professional, which is recognized by the Croatian manager. They work on developing their own brand through social networks and working with the media. You may not be a fan of social networks, but if it depends on your recognition and further development, then the issues of professionalism become urgent. As long as the player is in the club system and works alongside other industries, you should not be ashamed and ask questions. How do scouts work? Why do footballers perform certain exercises? Who is responsible for the partnership conditions? Learning does not stop for a minute, it is important to always be open to it.
Financial literacy and the ability to delegate responsibilities are important to modern athletes
American sport is very different from European, but fortunately in Ukraine there are those who are willing to share their own experiences. Stanislav Medvedenko played overseas in the best basketball league for many years but was forced to end his career due to injury. A stressful situation has become an indicator of professionalism.
Stanislav shared practical tips that will definitely help current athletes to determine their own values. “Money tends to run out. According to statistics, a very large proportion of NFL and NBA players remain bankrupt within a few years after they finish playing. Ignorance of the basics of financial literacy and lack of a person who could advise is the biggest problem. My advice is simple – you need to take care of the future, save and not get involved in dubious business projects. After the end of his sports career, there will be more time to understand all the nuances and use the earned money wisely,” the basketball player emphasized.
Asking questions is the easiest way to learn.
A top athlete can’t always be a cool manager. This thesis only encourages learning. Olivier Jarosz, a professor at the Swiss Football Business Academy, thinks so. “Nothing will work without the main wish. In fact, European leagues are now a little behind in development, but are actively adopting the experience of their American counterparts. They organize training courses for players who are finishing their careers and have no idea where to go. They take them under their wing. A professional athlete has a unique experience that is definitely needed to improve the organization of sports competitions.
As a conclusion of the discussion, each of the speakers stressed that the future of each athlete is only in his hands. Those who are hungry for knowledge always win, and it is never too late to learn. You have all the necessary tools for this, just use them.
“Parimatch aims to help and support Ukrainian athletes. Events such as Sport Talk Club help resolve the issues they face. Education is important and we understand it, so we talk about it openly with our guests and partners, ”said Parimatch representative Vadym Misyura.
