Daria Bilodid won a bronze medal in judo at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

Daria Bilodid is a bronze medalist of 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The 20-year-old judoka brought Ukraine the first medal of these games. Moreover, this is the debut Olympic award in women’s judo for our country.

Bilodid was one of our main hopes for a gold medal in Tokyo. For Daria, this is her first Olympic Games. The Ukrainian competes in the weight category up to 48 kg , was the second in the overall ranking.

Bilodid started her performance in Tokyo with the 1/8 finals, where she defeated Serbian Milica Nikolic, getting a waza-ari. In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian defeated her rival from Portugal, Katarina Costa, scoring ippon.

In the semifinals, Bilodid met with Japanese Funa Tonaki – one of the favorites for the Olympic gold medal. Ukrainian twice defeated this rival in the finals of the World Cup.

However, the semifinals of the Olympics turned out to be exhausting for the Ukrainian. At the beginning of the fight, Bilodid actually showed a technique, but it was not enrolled. Rivals failed to score points in regular time and a place in the final was determined by the Golden Score rule. Tonaki managed to score Ippon. In the final, she lacked strength after a tense match against the Ukrainian – and lost to rivals Distria Krasniki from Kosovo.

For the bronze Daria fought with a judoka Shira Rishon from Israel. The Ukrainian defeated her rival, who is 10 years older, scoring ippon at the end of the fight.

I gave my all, because the last fight was for the Golden Score, it’s incredibly difficult and exhausting. It’s important for me to get in the mood, because after the fight I lost, my mood was awful.

My mother, who is also my coach, helped a lot, cheered me and found the right words. I also felt support in the arena, – said Bilodid.

Immediately after the judge counted down her victory, Bilodid could not hold back tears and emotions after a hard day of competition.

Parimatch congratulates Daria and all of Ukraine on winning the first and most important medal at the Olympic Games. Thank you!
